The last free place on Earth.
Slab City, also called “The Slabs” is not only an RV city but also a place where people desert camp year-round. It is not really a city as there is no mayor, no city amenities like water, electricity, nor waste management. No one living here pay any taxes on their property because they are camping on it for free. Some call them squatters and others call it off grid living.
Formerly the U.S. Marine Corp training base calledCamp Dunlap used in World War II. It was closed, buildings were deconstructed, and abandoned years ago. The ownership of the land reverted from the military back to the State of California and has no current plans of being used.
Lately, it has also become a destination for journalists and film crews looking for a good story. And though the residents of Slab City don’t have trash collection or a sewage system, they have Internet access, and they follow the news about their home closely.
